Description
Sam Houston was elected Governor of Tennessee in 1827. He came to Texas in 1832 and was instrumental in helping Texas gain independence from Mexico. Houston served as major general of the Texas army and led his men to victory at the Battle of San Jacinto. He was elected President of the Republic of Texas twice, United States Senator from Texas and Governor of Texas. He was removed from office on March 16, 1861 for refusing to swear allegiance to the Confederacy and died in 1863.
