Stephen Fuller Austin, the father of Anglo American Texas, brought the first large group of American settlers to the area in the 1820s. After the independence of Texas from Mexico, President Sam Houston appointed Austin as the first secretary of state of the new republic. Austin served only two months before his untimely death at 43. He sat for this portrait in New Orleans the year he died and it hangs in the Senate Chamber.
