The Battle of San Jacinto, fought on April 21, 1836, was the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. From the Texas Capitol Historical Art Collection, the 1886 oil-on-canvas painting featured on our poster reproduction was researched and created by William Huddle to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the battle. It evokes the dramatic moment when General Sam Houston, victorious but wounded, accepts the surrender of captured Mexican General Santa Anna.

More than thirty other historical figures, including Deaf Smith, Thomas Jefferson Rusk, and Mirabeau B. Lamar, are depicted in the painting, including several veterans whom Huddle painted from life. The monumental original, measuring six feet tall and 12 feet long, has been on display at the south entrance Grand Foyer of the Texas State Capitol since 1891.
