The majestic Texas State Capitol, with its soaring dome and unique sunset granite quarried in the Texas Hill Country, is an enduring symbol of state pride. Today's capitol is actually the third capitol building in Austin. The first was a simple log structure, while the second, an 1853 Greek Revival beauty, was consumed by a calamitous fire in 1881.

The State of Texas conducted a national design contest for a new statehouse worthy of the Lone Star State, and received eleven entries. In the 1882 work that has been reproduced for this print, Elijah E. Myers (1832-1909), a Detroit architect who also designed the capitol buildings of Michigan and Colorado, rendered in delicate watercolors his conception of the south facade. After winning the competition, Myers produced 148 exquisite architectural drawings that were used by builder Gustav Wilke to create the monumental structure. Dedicated in 1888 and completely renovated in the 1990s, the Texas State Capitol's enduring beauty represents the strength of the Texas spirit.
