Liberty or Death. Our vibrant print is reproduced from the original 1836 San Jacinto battle flag, one of the most storied artifacts of the Texas Revolution. The arresting image of a sword-wielding goddess of liberty was painted on silk by New York artist James Henry Beard and presented to Captain Sidney Sherman and the volunteers of Newport, Kentucky, as they left their homes to go join the Texan revolutionary cause. The original flag measured approximately 4.5 feet tall and 5.5 feet long. On April 21, 1836, it became the Texan standard at the decisive Battle of San Jacinto which secured Texas independence.

The tattered icon remained in the Sherman family until 1896, when it was donated to the State of Texas. It was restored in the 1930s. Part of the Texas Capitol Historical Art Collection, it hangs in the House Chamber of the Texas State Capitol when the legislature is in session. To protect this irreplaceable artifact, at other times a replica is displayed.
