Description
Drawn by one of the most prolific draftsmen in General Land Office history, this 1859 map of Mason County by F.H. Arlitt is unique because of its whimsical title decoration. The letters that spell out the county name are caricatures of people. The “M” is made up of a man on crutches and a woman leaning on her broom. The “A” is an artist at his easel. The “S” appears to be Punch, a nineteenth-century British satirical character. The “O” is a couple dancing and the “N” is a cellist preparing to play his instrument.
