Description
Lorenzo de Zavala, a former governor of Mexico and Mexican Ambassador to France, came to Texas in 1835. His diplomacy and linguistic skills served him well; he signed the Texas Declaration of Independence and helped draft the Constitution of the Republic of Texas. He resigned as Vice President of the Republic and died less than a month later. This portrait hangs in the Senate Chamber.
