The Republic of Texas first issued paper money like the copies you see here in 1837. This "star money," so named because of the star on the front of the bill, was not face value currency. Instead they were interest-bearing notes that were signed over to the next recipient. Note that the Republic of Texas never officially minted any coins. 25.5" x 12.5"
